With his 30-year career at the top of the financial services community as an academic, politician and banker, Virata has done it all, and successfully. He was dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of the Philippines, and then became the country’s Minister of Finance from 1970 to 1986, managing the country’s budget and restructuring its debt. He next served as one of the Philippines’ last prime ministers from 1981 to 1986. After leaving politics, he headed the Bankers’ Association of the Philippines until March 2006. He was instrumental in managing the issuance of Philippine government bonds and notes in the U.S., U.K., Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and Kuwait.
